Frequently Asked Questions
Knowledge is POWER. When you know what is available to help yourself, you have the POWER to make the right decision.
Q. Should you choose a wig before you lose your hair?
A. It is easier to find the perfect style and colour before your hair loss compared to matching a style from a picture.
Q. Where do you go to purchase a wig?
A. Look for a local professional wig specialist that you immediately feel comfortable with.
Q. Why does a wig cost so much?
A. Is it human hair or synthetic? Machine-made, monotop or 100% hand-tied? The cost of wig depends on the construction of the cap or human hair versus synthetic. The better quality the cap is, the more expensive the wig will be.
Q. Does medical Insurance pay for my wig or hair piece?
A. If you have extended medical and your doctor's support, your medical hair prosthesis or cranial prosthesis (correct medical name when submitting) may be covered. Call your carrier and confirm. If yes, submit a prescription from your doctor with your sales receipt to your carrier.
Q. Are wigs sized differently and how do you know if you have been fitted correctly?
A In most cases there are petite, regular and large caps. It is very important to be fitted correctly. When you first try on a wig, they will feel uncomfortable. If it feels extra tight or if it feels like it wants to pop off your head, it is probably too small. If it falls low on your forehead, or the tabs are not centered at your temples or there is an airy space at the top of your head, the wig is too big. There are adjustable tabs on most wigs and in most cases, they are for comfort after the fact, not for the original fitting. Make sure the wig specialist explains the correct fit of a wig to you!
Q. How long does it take to order a wig?
A. Five to seven working days. You can have it overnight if you pay the overnight shipping charges. If the wig is in stock you can usually leave with it.
Q. How do you care for your wig?
A. Synthetic - No ifs, ands, or buts - use synthetic products on a synthetic wig. Shampoo, rinse out conditioner and a leave in conditioner are the three products you will need to keep the fibers healthy and strong. Depending on how much you wear your wig is how often you will need to wash it. If you are wearing it daily, you will probably need to wash it every 7 to 10 days. Remember less is best! STAY AWAY FROM THE OVEN AND STOVE WHILE WEARING YOUR WIG. Heat can/will damage your wig. If this happens, do not try to cut the damaged part yourself. Depending on the damage, the wig stylist may be able to help. DO NOT BLOW DRY OR CURL A SYNTHETIC WIG!
Human hair - For long lasting, healthy wigs, use the correct products. All salons selling human hair wigs should sell the products. Look for a product with lots of silicon. Silicon will help keep the hair strong and healthy. You can use a blow dryer and a curling iron on a human hair wig while taking into consideration the more styling you do, the harder it is on your wig. If you wear and style your wig on a regular basis, a deep conditioning silicone-based product will help.
Q. Can you colour a wig?
A. Before colouring a Human Hair wig consult with your wig specialist, make sure you know where the wig is from and what type of natural hair it is. A synthetic wig cannot be coloured.
Q. How long does a wig or hair piece usually last?
A. This will depend on the care of it. The better care you take of it the longer it will last. My hair loss is permanent so for a new look, I change my style around every eight months. If I wear my wig for longer than a year, it starts to lose shape and the fibers become frayed. It then starts to look like a wig.
Q. Is a wig warm, itchy or uncomfortable?
A. Some wigs will be warm, itchy and uncomfortable especially when you first start wearing them. You will not want to wear your wig every day, all day. Have other options available. The better quality the wig, specifically the 100% hand-tied wigs will be the best option to avoid the above discomfort.
Q. Will the wig or hair piece fall off?
A. If the wig or hair piece has been fitted correctly and you have been educated on how to wear it, you should not have any problems.
Q. Can you sleep with a wig or hair piece on?
A. This is up to the individual. Semi-permanent hair pieces are designed to stay on for up to 6 weeks. If you wear a clip-on hair piece, they are designed for day use. By leaving your wig or hair piece on while sleeping, it will shorten the life span of the product eventually the fibers will break down causing damage.
